Facebook 99% Culture Free

The young upstart social network Facebook is deciding to embrace mediocrity at the ascent of its popularity. Over the last few weeks Facebook has removed a feminist pro porn page( no porn was displayed or linked too), the Liberator sex furniture company had its page removed, they recently they removed a pot legalization ad.

Of course, Facebook, as a private company can decide their own policies, and a user can decide whether they wish to participate in Facebook. But it seems the social networking company is drafting their policies as they go, respond to whatever pressure group makes enough noise.  The acts I described above seem to contradict their mission that it is “giving people the power to share and make the world more open and connected”.

They are breaking a rule of business which is to stick with one thing and do it well, instead they seem to be distracted by the very Clinton-esque method of trying to sell to everyone, making everyone happy, instead of focusing on their original mission. A company not focusing on its goals or mission, has long term negative revenue consequences for a business.

The primary reason I choose not participate in Facebook is that to me it functions as a marketing platform, nor was I inclined to participate when they first came on the scene as a way for high school and college kids to share photos from the previous weekends kegger. Now as they have loftier ambitions will they too become apprehensive in search of the almighty dollar, afraid to take risks, becoming irrelevant,  like their predecessors, AOL, or Yahoo.

We’ll see…

New Reads

Some quick bits.

Over at Counterpunch Dr Susan Block gives us some lovely verbiage with her review of the Bonobo Handshake by Vanessa Woods.

And after a tweet about this new book, a wonderful easy to read dissertation titled Sex At Dawn The Pre Historic Origins Of Modern Sexuality. Anyone interested in any aspect of sexual congress should read this book. Certain the author(s) will be making the day time talk show rounds if they havnt already.

If Your Not Hetero Your Against Us

You might have heard in the news of a video called Collateral Murder, a video testimony of the uselessness of war shown to the world by the organization Wikileaks. The person who provided that video was a young US Army Specialist by the name of Bradley Manning. You can read background about the story here, here, and here.

Though the media will largely ignore this heroic effort by this young man, the picture they will paint will be that of a solitary, angry man. Already there are allegations that the guy is a “pre transgendered male” who was upset at the dont ask dont tell policy, the media will stoke the homophobic fears of Americans. Painting the young man in a negative light, instead of applauding and standing up for what this kid did.

As if being gay, bi, or transgendered were more of a crime than projecting unwarranted violence on a distant people. For when they mention Mr Manning, with his “stylish upswept hair” or any individual in the media having non hetero tendencies it is usually implied as to “what” type of sex they prefer, not “with” whom they prefer. The Supreme Court nominee Kagan underwent much the same sort of smear when she was first introduced.

Large media outlets today serve as marketing tools for whatever corporate umbrella they would be under. Take this story from Violet Blue, the hidden agenda behind some anti porn groups; or the marketing driven news supplements that play on emotion to jump start sales.

For in this day and age of Corporate Media, sexual acceptance comes down to two factors, on the one hand you need to display along with big tits, a virginal purity, acting whimsical and submissive; or if you are not violently destroying something then fucking it brutally, you are a sodden wimp who deserves to be pushed around.

Knowledge Is Power

Listening to Kink On Tap this week reminded me of the ever widening gap between what passes for information and knowledge these days. I like Kink On Tap, applaud what they are doing, so this is no way a critical assessment, merely an observation.

What leaped out at me was how outrageously taken out of context the quotes from Camille Paglia’s article talking about the drug Flibernasian, and bemoaning the poison of “bourgeois propriety“.  Kink On Tap discussed briefly an article that was written using two quotes from Camille’s article somehow placing the blame for middle class white folks lack of sexual satisfaction on the social networking phenomena of 2009.

It was odd that the hosts of Kink On Tap were not aware of Camille Paglia, given that they counter second wave anti porn feminist, they were not familiar with Camilles 1990 treatise Sexual Personae, or her work in general. I don’t agree with all that Camille writes but her essays are a relevantand useful tool in the sex positive “movement”.

Sexual Personae, attacked the academic, and cultural inbreeding that has spawned such creatures like this anti porn group. Camille celebrates the sexually risque, the queer, androgynous cultural history that is hidden from society.

There is so much information in the world, but very little knowledge, you can scroll through news groups, or social networking sites. After a while though its much like riding in a car on a freeway through a busy city, lots of bumpers stickers slogans, soft porn billboard advertising, and consistently dull uniform retail outlets.

I like Kink On Tap, hope they will maybe sift deeper through some of the raw material that is being produced, smelting that information into the hard steel of knowledge.

Truth Dying On The Vine

We were sitting in the bar, its long oak table stretched beside us, its solid surface decorated with various drinks of gold, red, and brown. The altar of various tribes of spirits in front of us as we looked backed at our reflections. We were listening John Pilger on Democracy Now as he was speaking of “a war on truth telling” regarding this article, exposing a small part of the soap opera that is our imperial regime.

Jeez guy who wrote the article must have really pissed someone off, a colleague remarked, putting his glass to his lips.

He told the the truth, he reported what he saw, and who is to say that perhaps, his subject wanted did things he wanted the reporter to see, another of our group of four commented.

A patron from the corner hearing our conversation said; “I cant believe a man of that rank not knowing what he was getting himself into when allowing a reporter to follow him, if he is that naive then he deserves to be fired.”

I agreed with the sentiment by this commentary, and got the feeling the story was written as though the general was working with the reporter to lay the groundwork for either a political career, or a Hollywood film development deal.

Isn’t there an old army saying he was so dumb even the other generals noticed.

Which led to more drinks, then extended ramblings about the larger questions ignored by the laughable mainstream media.

Always at War with something aren’t we ? The war on truth in whatever form, the truth about sex, the truth about our government, the truth about processed food, the list goes on ad nauseam.

We looked back at our beers while on the tv the obedient media wolves continued to descended upon any offensive interloper. Enforcing a strict omerta on anyone who dare speak out, whether it be politics, sex, culture, or education.

Sex Is Strong In Ukraine

Interesting post by the sage of sexually smart Dr. Marty Klein taking a working holiday in the Ukraine.

He said:

I was told over and over that Ukrainian women dressed to kill because there are too many women chasing too few men. Why? The answers reveal plenty about Ukrainian society.

First, many men drink so much that they’re uninteresting companions, poor sexual partners, lousy marriage prospects, or violent. Second, many men clearly have poor job and financial futures—they’re under-educated, under-motivated, and living through a poor economy. Third, many men are unprepared for women who are now feeling more entitled and more independent.

The result: the few guys who are good catches can be very, very picky. For better or worse, young Ukrainian women are competing for these guys by advertising their, um, beauty. Or sexuality—take your pick.

Reminds me of dating in college.

Her Animal Lust

Georgia is a big fan of HBO’s True Blood, which is about to begin its third season this weekend.  I like watching the show, but for different reasons.

Something happens to Georgia when she sees real life couple Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer shedding their clothes on screen. Or maybe its the pandering of pseudo s/m fetish designs, along with plenty of unabashed visual provocation that gets Georgia’s blood flowing.

You can view the trailer of the new season here.
