Facebook 99% Culture Free

The young upstart social network Facebook is deciding to embrace mediocrity at the ascent of its popularity. Over the last few weeks Facebook has removed a feminist pro porn page( no porn was displayed or linked too), the Liberator sex furniture company had its page removed, they recently they removed a pot legalization ad.

Of course, Facebook, as a private company can decide their own policies, and a user can decide whether they wish to participate in Facebook. But it seems the social networking company is drafting their policies as they go, respond to whatever pressure group makes enough noise.  The acts I described above seem to contradict their mission that it is “giving people the power to share and make the world more open and connected”.

They are breaking a rule of business which is to stick with one thing and do it well, instead they seem to be distracted by the very Clinton-esque method of trying to sell to everyone, making everyone happy, instead of focusing on their original mission. A company not focusing on its goals or mission, has long term negative revenue consequences for a business.

The primary reason I choose not participate in Facebook is that to me it functions as a marketing platform, nor was I inclined to participate when they first came on the scene as a way for high school and college kids to share photos from the previous weekends kegger. Now as they have loftier ambitions will they too become apprehensive in search of the almighty dollar, afraid to take risks, becoming irrelevant,  like their predecessors, AOL, or Yahoo.

We’ll see…
